Megan McLaughlin presented at the 'Getting Ahead of the Wrecking Ball' Workshop this morning at the Coral Gables Museum. Hosted by The Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables and The Villagers, Inc., the workshop was meant to show and encourage citizens how to be pro-active in protecting historic places in their community. Megan's presentation, "How to be Alert for Potentially Endangered Sites," focused on how to identify the very places that are in danger of being destroyed. Will share keys to creating healthy, connected communitiesJuan Mullerat will serve panel that explores urban infill development on a variety of scales. The presentation will take place March 2 in Tampa and the Congress for New Urbanism’s statewide conference.Mullerat will present PlusUrbia’s successful urban design for infill projects such as the Wynwood Neighborhood Revitalization District, which has won national, state and regional awards from the American Planning Association. He will also detail PlusUrbia’s work in Little Havana as a partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We’ll explore both assets (including high density to support public transit; affordable housing in close proximity to jobs) and challenges including lack of park space for healthy recreation, limited access to fresh food and a zoning code that prevents infill with small units and no parking. For a fraction of what exurbs or new towns cost, the inner city can be retrofitted in a more sustainable manner. The session will also focus on creative ways to change alleys, narrow utility corridors that are rarely seen as public spaces, to make them inviting public places, as well as “green infrastructure”. The session will focus on the traditional uses of alleys, and some ideas for transforming them into inviting public spaces. Sofia Villanueva of PlusUrbia Design participated last month in a workshop in the city of Curridabat, Costa Rica, in collaboration with Castillo Arquitectos, from Guatemala, who were the Project’s Lead, and Dover Kohl & Partners of Florida. The workshop entailed a week long, hands-on visualization of different areas of the city to improve the infrastructure and civic spaces in order to spark the re-investment on the city. PlusUrbia, under Castillo Arquitectos’ lead, is currently working on the production of a report that will include a Form-Based-Code intended to structure future development, ensuring healthy growth and the provision of a safe and forward-looking environment for the municipality’s citizens.
