Carina Mendoza

“The more you know, the more you care.”
Carina assists with the historical research for the neighborhood surveys and documentation projects. Growing up in Miami she saw the rapid changes the city has undergone. She gained a greater understanding of Miami’s culture through studying its social history, looking past the fast-paced progress to see the community. Traveling to and exploring other major cities has given her an appreciation for what can connect people to a place – walkability and intentional preservation efforts.

background / experience / Vision /

Carina holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Florida. She previously worked for the education programs of Dade Heritage Trust and Miami EcoAdventures. With the common goal of connecting the community to the city’s natural environs, she developed and presented tours to locals and tourists alike.

Carina’s previous work focused on educating local students and the public on Miami’s history and native ecosystems. Her interpretive tours explored public parks, nature preserves, and historic buildings. She aimed to tell the story of Miami through its trees and the memories held in its buildings. She has also been part of several of Plusurbia’s documentation projects.

It is important to maintain the character of a place, to protect what first made it special. Throughout its history the city and its natural environments have shaped each other. As those environments disappear we should honor the past while preparing for the future.
