Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization’s  E-W Corridor

Project Type: Mobility and Land Use Designation
Project Status: Ongoing
Site Area: East-West Corridor from Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) to Florida International University (FIU)
Team: Atkins + PlusUrbia
Client: Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO)

PlusUrbia provides urban design and land use planning for the SMART Plan, a comprehensive approach to creating six rapid transit corridors. As part of the Atkins team, the studio held multiple workshops and worked with the Study Advisory Group to get stakeholder input on transportation solutions and land use.

One of the project’s major goals is to create more dense and intense land uses along the East-West transit corridor that will link the Miami Intermodal Center at Miami International Airport with Florida International University’s main campus in west Miami-Dade.

The Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners has contemplated a Tax Increment Financing District along the corridor to contribute significant funding for rapid transit. A TIF, incorporating a mile on each side of the corridor, could capture property values increased by Transit Oriented Development and proximity to rapid transit.
