Project Type: Comprehensive Trail Planning and Trail-Oriented Development Strategy
Site Area: Countywide
Team: Plusurbia Design (Lead) + EXP + Business Flare
Prepared For: Miami-Dade County
Sponsored By: Knight Foundation + Terra
Trails offer proven benefits wherever they are built, expanding connectivity, broadening transportation choice, and strengthening community identity, while linking neighborhoods to regional destinations and serving as green spines for economic development, generating over $138.5 billion in economic benefits nationally each year according to the Rails to Trails Conservancy. Around the nation, however, trail planning has long been split across agencies working in parallel rather than in coordination. PlusUrbia, working alongside EXP and Business Flare, led the Countywide Trail-Oriented Development Report on behalf of Miami-Dade County, with support from the Knight Foundation and Terra as project sponsors, evaluating every existing and proposed mile of trail to identify catalytic opportunity sites for trail-oriented development (TrOD).
The resulting study scores each corridor across five priority topics and seventeen variables, producing a three-tier ranking that identifies which trails, both built and proposed, stand to deliver the greatest community impact. This is particularly evident in the identification of catalytic trail-oriented development nodes, one per commission district, positioned to attract private investment and jumpstart momentum for trail-oriented development. Rounding out the analysis, the report pairs design guidance and implementation strategy with a companion interactive website, giving Miami-Dade County a sustained framework for building out its trail network.
