Belmont, NC–Plusurbia is thrilled to announce the completion of a successful multi-month public engagement campaign in the City of Belmont. Featuring eight community workshops, informative presentations, Q&A, small group meetings and an online survey, the initiative provided essential guidance for the city’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan update.

Altogether, our team received nearly 1,600 comments on Belmont’s opportunities, challenges and aspirations, far exceeding community involvement during the last plan update in 2018. We also invested over two weeks of in-person time, talking with community stakeholders and getting to know Belmont, foraging a deeper connection with residents, business owners and community leaders.

This work was instrumental, as comprehensive plans guide the future of our cities. They act as the roadmap for a place’s next 10, 20, or even 50 years, outlining how to implement inclusive, resilient, and aesthetic solutions that balance growth with preservation, innovation with tradition, and current needs with future aspirations.

However, at 250 pages in length, Belmont’s current comprehensive plan has become difficult to use, and is at risk of being ignored when important decisions about city growth and redevelopment arise. By refreshing this guiding document with the latest data, new community input, and reorganization that puts its key policies first, our team is crafting a more practical, ergonomic plan.

To accomplish this, even after gathering this wealth of insights, we will continue communicating with the public, launching our second survey on August 1. Created by synthesizing all community feedback received, this survey asks about policy directions for topics like Land Use, Mobility and the Environment, posing the question: “Did we hear you?”

The next steps in the update process will draw on these findings as we craft the plan’s final goals, policies and actions with our Technical Advisory Committee. Together, we are building a stronger comprehensive plan for a stronger Belmont.
