Maria grew up in Guatemala and from a very young age was inspired by the historic town planning principles and traditional architecture of her country. Her curiosity and sense of adventure led her to travel locally and internationally and this helped fuel her passion and appreciation for walkable, inclusive, resilient, and healthy cities. Maria lives in Miami with her family and works out of the Miami Office and taking pride on working on projects that help shape, revitalize, and enhance communities.

Bendfeldt was educated as an architect in Guatemala City and later moved to the United States and obtained her master’s degree in urban design at the University of Miami. Prior to joining Plusurbia, Bendfeldt expanded her Architectural and Planning experience working for respected architectural and planning firms giving her the opportunity to work and learn from world renowned urban designers, such as Leon Krier.
Maria has worked at Plusurbia Design for over 12 years and has expanded her knowledge and experience by working alongside a group of talented and creative professionals.

For over 20 years Maria Bendfeldt has worked on dozens of successful form-based codes and master plans both in the public and private sector. Throughout her career, Bendfeldt has consistently promoted and implemented forward-thinking land-use policies that emphasize walkability and multi-modal mobility. Her expertise in urban design, land use planning, and public involvement have been honored with national, statewide, and regional planning awards.

Bendfeldt served as the primary author for the award-winning Wynwood Neighborhood Revitalization District, the Coconut Grove Core Master Plan and the Village of El Portal Form-Based Code.

I believe collaboration is the key to success. When everybody comes together and works as one, productivity improves, good relationships are formed, the flow of work becomes smoother, and tasks are completed more quickly and effectively.
