MIAMI, FL – January 10, 2013 – PlusUrbia led the design of ‘Port Side Miami’, in collaboration with GSHStudio, OskiStudio and studioLFA. The design calls for a new commercial district on the west end of the Port’s Dodge Island that will include office space, retail, restaurants and a number of high-end hotels.

Port Side Miami is endowed with a privileged location that affords its buildings with outstanding views of Miami, Key Biscayne and South Beach. This project becomes the ideal upscale destination for residents and visitors alike; retail, office and hotels provide round the clock activity that transforms Port Miami into an anchor for South Florida as well as setting a new standard for new waterfront development.

Port Side’s prime location and development standards will become the newest and finest of Miami’s emerging districts, not only attracting tourists with a range of hotel options but also as a new trade and service district, following WTC goals. Connectivity to mainland is crucial to the district’s success; providing a range of transportation options, Port Side will seem as an immediate extension of downtown while maintaining its identifiable urban island feel. Including one of the city’s longest public promenades – Port Side will become a destination by simply its physical attributes, engaging the water’s edge at every level and in a variety of manners supported by shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants on the water.

Tianjin DongJiangGang, located on newly reclaimed land on the waterfront of the Bohai Bay, in Tianjin China, creates a new paradigm as a livable community in the region being in harmony with its environment, imbedding sustainable and inherent site elements in a built and natural twine that results in a jiving environmental concert. A careful study of northern-european waterfront city making traditions in similar climatic conditions to those of DongJiangGang, led the design of DJG to become highly conscientious in its design intentions and results that promote discourse between its built and unbuilt dichotomies. From the desire to create safe, healthy and educated communities that evolve into resident-oriented and environment-friendly master plans, design results in the culmination of well stitched patch-work between commercial centers, residential units and waterfronts providing open water views to all residents and visitors from both public and private locations. The waterfront, therefore becomes a superb setting for this utopian idea of shared spaces and common-wealth, where people can enjoy ocean views both from indoors and varied outdoor areas. The master plan promotes this common-wealth idea by providing ‘shared’ views to the water maximized by willing the buildings into v-shapes that, enhanced with height, hierarchy, and variation in residential typologies, create a homogeneous array of unit types that encourage social interaction. Careful attention has been given to the design of the shoreline that becomes the main community amenity. This continuous linear open space makes a unique recreational space for residents and visitors alike. It protects and promotes the natural beauty of the area while standing as a unifying edge that transitions between “life-by-the-water’s-edge” to a rational interpretation of traditional waterfront living. The language of the architecture attempts to bridge a contemporary paradigm of historical precept on newly reclaimed (man-made) land. Un-served by immediate stylistic or historical context. Simplicity and elegance are paramount to create a backdrop to the natural beauty of the site engaging the sun, water and site edges without whimsically applying paradigms that contradict or dictate new form or discourse. In respect to this dialogue between nature and new form that detaches and engages the site conditions, DJG employs simple forms and colors that are disposed and utilized following pragmatic precepts: ie. openings to provide views, volumes to orient and terminate vistas so architecture create backdrops and respond to their civic duty of creating and enhancing spaces subdued by human scale and proportion laws. In collaboration with studioLFA, LopezJaimes, Walter Chatham

The Master Plan has evolved from the desire to create safe, healthy and educated communities with improved lifestyles that engage the surrounding landscape.

The inspiration for the Antler Master Plan is to create an exemplary community that enhances the natural beauty of Chongqing, setting new benchmarks for design excellence and sustainability, in harmony with the environment. Antler Master Planned Community is proposed as a world class community that embraces the harmonious entwining of a sustainable habitat for humans, flora and fauna alike. The ultimate measure of this endeavor’s success is the conveyance of an improved quality of life for its residents, a healthful, secure, cultured and agreeable lifestyle where the elusive hope for sensible living can finally be fulfilled.

The aim of this project is the creation of a space enhances the experiential access to the Bakehouse Art Complex. We conceived an intervention that is endowed with a considerable level of autonomy. By clearly defining the space and providing a compatible, yet distinct language, the intrinsic characteristics of both existing and proposed are redefined in a new choreographed space. This strategy provides a location for out-door venues as well as a welcoming entrance to the BAC’s facility.

Our design provided a well defined three-dimensional space that became the heart of the new BAC.

We seldom find land panning projects that incorporate the artistry of the ultra-modern-chic-stylized-look of “starchitects” with the pragmatic and modest yet skillful layouts derived from traditional precepts and principles. Surveying the strata of contemporary designs, “starchitects” sometimes lack and often purposely dismiss realism, sacrificing the creation of livable places in lieu of visual impacting images that seek to call attention to themselves and nothing more – these are projects that are made for publication and not for living. On the other hand, traditional design methods follow principle systematically sacrificing vision and often relegating interventions to “another Traditional Neighborhood Development” (TOD). In these cases, we often find livable communities that create “a sense of place” disregarding the identity inherent in each and every site where they intervene. The imposition of a new “Genius Loci” (spirit of place) at the expense of loosing the historical/social/etymological value inherent in each site. ____ Playa Inca is the first of a series of studies that seek to find common ground between artistry and traditional principles by using locally identifiable patterns that become the crux of design, introducing proven principles and techniques from traditional land planning. Located in close proximity to a Peruvian oceanfront town, Playa Inca derives its form from the legacy of Incan construction methods. Its thoroughfare network, open space system and lot division is extrapolated from the joints created in Incan walls. These forms are morphed into the land following the terrain and respecting existing streams, topography and beach-dunes. Embedded within this framework a central all-purpose building faces one of the open-space and provides some civic and commercial uses to the project. ___ *These design series is intended for research and education and not for construction.
